Stephen Sommers is in negotiations to direct Tarzan: Lord of the Apes for Warner Bros. Stuart Beattie, his script writing parter on the recently wrapped G.I. Joe, will help pen the story.
I’m not sure how much of a fresh take they can have on the whole king of the jungle story. The original book was published in 1912 and since then there have been 88 different Tarzan titles. Disney did their animated version in 1999 when Phil Collins earned an Oscar for the soundtrack.
The trades say Guillermo del Toro was attached to direct this about two years ago, but has since moved on to dual Hobbit movies for WB.
Sommers also directed the first two Mummy movies and Van Helsing, so I’m glad he’ll be tied up with more garbage no one cares about. Because honestly, who is excited about another Tarzan?
Maybe his buddy Brendan Fraser will be cast and we’ll get another George of the Jungle.
