Twilight is all the buzz today (opening day!), but are the Twilight movie reviews living up to expectations? Meh. Overall, Twilight reviews are a mixed bag, with the movie coming in at a middle ground with critics.
Among the Twilight Reviews, Metacritic.com gives it a 57 out of 100 average, based on 29 critic reviews (11 regular folks’ reviews average to 6.5 out of 10). Here’s a sampling:
Entertainment Weekly, Owen Gleiberman - “On screen, Twilight is repetitive and a tad sodden, too prosaic to really soar. But Hardwicke stirs this teen pulp to a pleasing simmer.” Score: 75
TV Guide, Tracie Cooper: “In terms of bringing the book to life, Twilight is a complete success, so much so that most of the film’s flaws work within the context of the story.” Score: 75
Los Angeles Times, Kenneth Turan: “Hardwicke has connected so intensely to the Meyer novel that it’s hard to imagine anyone else making a better version.” Score: 70
Chicago Sun-Times, Roger Ebert: “Twilight will mesmerize its target audience, 16-year-old girls and their grandmothers. Their mothers know all too much about boys like this.” Score: 63
USA Today, Claudia Puig: “Despite questionable casting, wooden acting, laughable dialogue and truly awful makeup, nothing is likely to stop young girls from swarming to this kitschy adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s popular novel.” Score: 50
Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer reviews are just below mediocre, weighing in with Twilight at just 45%.
