The Pang Brothers - 2008
Lionsgate Region 1 DVD

The Pang Brothers remake of their 1999 version of Bangkok Dangerous is not as good as the original, but neither is it as bad as some critics have have it. Perhaps making an English language film takes away a layer of the exotic that would be ascribed to work that was either largely in Thai or Cantonese. The Pangs are due auteurist consideration because of their consistent visual style and themes.

What is usually ignored is that the Pangs are Hong Kong filmmakers who primarily work in Thailand. This point is brought up because, as the Pangs are outsiders based on language and culture, their films are about outsiders. The main characters in the Pang films may be from another country, be differently abled, or simply find themselves, as in Re-Cycle as strangers in a strange land. In the original Bangkok Dangerous, the hitman is deaf, but his deafness works on his behalf so that he is not distracted by the sound of his gun. He is also from the country, and he and his friends are considered marginal even within the Thai underworld. The remake has Cage as the foreigner in Thailand, hired to do a job, but separated by culture and language.

With his hair dyed black, Cage sometimes appears like a ghost, or a cadaver. Early in the film, in part of his off screen narration, Cage's character, Joe, mentions disappearing like a ghost. The suggestion is that Joe is already dead, emotionally and morally, if not literally. This would also be fitting as part of the Pangs' other films which are frequently ghost stories. It is Joe's renewed sense of humanity that is his ultimate undoing. This is somewhat parallel to The Eye in which the blind woman is "cured", only to see a world more terrible than imagined.

As a switch from the first Bangkok Dangerous, Charlie Yeung portrays a deaf-mute pharmacist. While this allows the Pangs to again explore the dilemma of characters who are unable to communicate with each other, the scenes with Cage work against the film in presenting a tourist's view of Bangkok. We are to believe that Joe, a world traveler, would find Thai food too spicy, causing him to break out in a sweat. The scene with Cage and Yeung making friends with an elephant also feels contrived. What does work is a scene where Yeung hands Cage a note declaring her feelings for him while the two are walking in a deserted park at night. We see Yeung in close-up, absorbed in infatuation, while we see Cage taking on two would be muggers in the background. Yeung cannot hear what is going on and is completely unaware of what has happened behind her until she feels the splash of blood on her jacket. While the scene is a reworking of a similar scene from the first version, it is one of the few moments in the new Bangkok Dangerous that is perfectly realized.

Parts of the new Bangkok Dangerous look like they were filmed in the attempt to give the film international appeal. While this is understandable considering the higher financial stakes, it also forces compromise on filmmakers, often denying them the ability to make the kind of films that initially garnered attention. Even the Pangs disorienting visual style has been toned down considerably. While the first Bangkok Dangerous was down and dirty, the new film too often emphasizes the exotic side of Bangkok, and not enough of the dangerous.

The woman, named Jin, is actually a member of the ancient race of naga -- snake gods who live in human form but can transform into giant serpents. So no, despite a snake-haired teaser poster, this is not the same story as The Snake King's Child.

Posters and trailers seemed to promise a sexy romance in addition to fantastic action, but viewers expecting to see some hot naked snake sex will be disappointed. There's only a glimpse of skin, shot so close up you can't tell whose skin it is or what part of the body it's on.

The special effects involving the giant snake aren't too bad. They don't really get going until the end though, keeping up an illusion of suspense, and likely preventing the CGI budget from breaking the bank. When the naga is finally glimpsed, the picture is still a bit murky, hazy and greenish, but it's convincing enough.

The real strength of Deep in the Jungle is the rich storytelling, which is a surprise. Usually, the films from Phranakorn make no sense at all and are painful to watch. I actually cried as the credits rolled, not because I was hurting, but out of sheer joy and exhilaration. I'd actually made it through the movie without pulling out what little remains of my hair. I wanted to give congratulatory hugs to everyone involved.

Leading the cast is "Tik" Jesadaporn Pholdee as the enigmatic special forces sniper Nawin. Despite his head of scraggly Nic Cage long hair, Tik comes off very much the hero as he chainsmokes bidi cigarettes and tramps around in the jungle. He's a die-hard soldier who is officially dead and comes near being killed several times.

Ploy Jindachote isn't given much more to say than just her character's name, Jin. But she does a great job at conveying the conflict she feels in her body, which has a giant snake inside, just itching to shed its human skin and get out.

Pasin Ruengwut is Manus, the determined leader of a team of black-suited operatives who are out to capture Jin.

The helpful Sergeant Dang (a long-haired, spectacles-wearing Kowit Wattanakul) explains that the British first a cave-tomb of the nagas, somewhere deep in the jungles of the Golden Triangle. Then, using the apocryphal photo of U.S. soldiers holding a "naga" as a springboard for the narrative, the cave was rediscovered by the CIA during the Laos Secret War in the 1970s, and American scientists have been trying since then to capture a live naga in an operation codenamed "S21".

The story begins with Nawin on a mission along the Thai-Burmese border, where he is to shoot a druglord leader of a rebel army. But the presence of Manus in the village causes the mission to be scrubbed. Manus is there to take possession of Jin, who had been captured along with other hilltribe people.

But Nawin opens fire anyway, but not before he glimpses the mysterious Jin through his rifle's scope.

Back in Bangkok, the injured Nawin fights his way out of a military hospital and goes looking for Jin. Meanwhile, Jin's brother Jaiy -- played by none other than a beefed-up Sakda Kaewbuadee, a regular from the films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul -- has also followed Jin to Bangkok. He's a naga also, and he's leaving bloody trails as he slithers around the underpasses, riverbanks and storm drains looking for Jin.

Eventually the action returns to the jungle, where Nawin is shot by Manus. The force of the shot knocks Nawin off the edge of a high waterfall. Jin leaps after him. The two wash up downstream and are discovered by hilltribe villagers. The pair then enjoy a brief idyllic existence, living among the hunter-gatherers and engaging in interspecies romance.

But Manus and his GPS tracker are never very far away, and in the grand Thai tradition of raberd poa, khaow pao kratom ("bomb the mountain, burn the huts") movies, the black-ops team and allied druglord armies storm the village, killing women and children. It is violent as hell. Finally, there's the big reveal of the big mean monster snakes, which can twist a man's body in half.

Will romance ever work out for Nawin and Jin? Not if her brother has anything to say about it. But Nawin has a way of never dying, even after he's repeatedly shot and stabbed. Possibly he's protected by the large garuda tattoo on his back, or maybe he is a garuda. But we'll never know, unless there's a sequel.

See also:

Deep in the Jungle at Pranakorn Film

Fan-subbed trailer for Deep in the Jungle at YouTube

Related posts:

Naked in the jungle (posters)

Fantasy horror from Phranakorn: Deep in the Jungle

When you hear the name Jerry Bruckheimer, you generally think of guns and explosions rather than cuddly pets, but in Disney’s upcoming film G-Force, you get a good dose of both! Don’t get too excited, fanboys… the movie has nothing to do the Battle of the Planets anime series. In this case, “G” stands for “Guinea” — as in guinea pig. G-Force is a highly trained group of covert ops guinea pigs, and in case you hadn’t guessed, this is the latest movie in the “live action meets CG talking animal” craze, following up on the popularity of such hits as Underdog and Beverly Hills Chihuahua.

There seems to be a lot of disdain around the web for these kinds of movies, but to be honest, I’d rather watch something like this than most of the fully CG animated films coming out as of late. With a voice cast of Nicolas Cage, Penélope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, and Tracy Morgan, and a live action cast that includes Bill Nighy, Will Arnett and Zach Galifianakis, there’s a part of me that thinks this could be a lot of fun. The release date for G-Force is July 24th, 2009, which can mean only one thing: instant drive-in classic, baby! Check out the first trailer for G-Force below and see what you think.

It's a hard job choosing my 10 favourite tracks, but an enjoyable one. Feel free to list your own picks in the comments below.

1/ 'Down In The Tube Station At Midnight'. "I first felt a fist, and then a kick. I could now smell their breath. They smelt of pubs, and Wormwood Scrubs and too many right wing meetings". The song they always used to finish with before the encores, and my own favourite. Weller conjures up all manner of chills with this frightening tale of menace on the London Underground. Brutal and brilliant!

2/ 'A' Bomb In Wardour Street'. "If this is freedom I don't understand, 'cause it seems like madness to me". How right he was. Now, our streets are unsafe to walk at night, unless you have a guardian A looking over your shoulder. This track is pure dynamite as Weller spits out lyrics with the venom of a cage of Puff Adders. Far-seeing, and even more disturbing now.

3/ 'Going Underground'. "And the public gets what the public wants, but I want nothing this society's got". Weller on the attack again with this scathing indictment of governmental evils. Open your eyes now as then.

4/ 'Strange Town'. "I look in the mirror but I can't be seen, just a thin clean layer of Mr. Sheen looking back at me oh oh, ohoooooooh". Glorious anthem and just about the best song ever written about the loneliness of London.

5/ 'When You're Young'. "But you find out life isn't like that. It's so hard to comprehend, when you set up your dreams to have them smashed in the end". Part of their 'Golden Run' when every single was absolutely perfect, and every gig reached out and sucked you into a better place for 100 minutes. Savage, and beautifully written.

6/ 'That's Entertainment'. "A smash of glass and the rumble of boots. An electric train and a ripped up phone booth. Paint splattered walls and the cry of a tom cat, lights going out and a kick in the balls". Poetry set to music. Still gets to me, and that's what Weller intended.

7/ 'Town Called Malice'. "Stop dreaming of the quiet life, cos it's the one you'll never know". Memories of Woking for Mr. Weller, and A Love Supreme(s). Dynamite!

8/ 'The Eton Rifles'. "Sup up your beer and collect your fags, there's a row goin' on down near Slough". A call to arms for any impressionable young men who longed to take it to the upper-classes. By this time, they really were a force to be reckoned with.

9/ 'Thick As Thieves'. "We stole the love from young girls in ivory towers, we stole autumn leaves and summer showers. We stole the silent wind that says you are free, we stole everything that we could see". Stack this one up with Jonesy's 'Stay Free'. Great vocal and some of the most alive lyrics you'll ever hear.

10/ 'Butterfly Collector'. "There's tarts and whores but you're much more. You're a different kind cos you want their mind". You got hate mail! This song (b side of 'Strange Town') was always one of the highlights of their shows. You really would want PW on your side; even more so after listening to the lyrics on this.

11/ 'David Watts'. Ok, I am a dull and simple lad, cannot tell ele-ven from ten.... couldn't leave this one out. Cheers to Ray Davies, and to Paul and the guys for making it even more special.

I was lucky enough to see The Jam live on 14 occasions. Their 2 nights at Leicester De Montfort Hall will always reside in my top gigs list, and although I felt great sadness when they split, the memories they left behind are to be treasured.

DVD Review by Kam Williams

Headline: Nic Cage Shoot ‘Em Up Out on DVD

When you pair Nicolas Cage with the Pang Brothers, something’s gotta give. While the Oscar-winning actor is ordinarily associated with high-quality Hollywood productions, the Thailand-based twins are generally known as purveyors of micro-budget B-movies lacking in plausibility and coherency. Unfortunately, Oxide and Danny apparently prevailed when it came to this slapdash remake of their first feature-length collaboration from 1999.
The original, a tawdry tale of violence and redemption, revolved around a deaf mute assassin-for-hire inspired to atone for his sins after falling head-over-heels for a compassionate cashier. This new, if not improved, version flips the script slightly, changing the protagonist’s nationality from Thai to American. Another switcheroo involves afflicting the love interest with the aforementioned disabilities, thus enabling Cage’s Joe to be the one that shows empathy. Oh, he also narrates the play-by-play in an annoyingly blasé monotone.
At the point of departure we find Joe en route to Bangkok for a deadly assignment that is supposed to be that proverbial last big payday before retirement. Via voiceover, the cocky mercenary offers a quick primer on his profession: “(1) Don’t ask questions; (2) There is no right and wrong; (3) Don’t take an interest in people outside of work; and (4) Know when to get out and walk away rich.”
Upon arriving in Thailand, however, he immediately proceeds to ignore all of his own advice. For example, the supposedly singularly-focused cold-blooded murderer has his head turned by the cute pharmacy clerk (Charlie Yeung) who bandages his wounded arm after a fierce gun battle.
The two subsequently start dating, and in the relatively-sane private moments they share, Joe discovers his sensitive side. Will the kindlier-friendlier hit man muster up the courage to finish the job, collect his fee and disappear into the sunset with the girl? Be prepared to suffer through two hours of one-dimensional characters delivering cliché-ridden lines laced with fortune cookie logic if you care to find out.
How do you borrow elements of The Transporter, The Karate Kid and Mission Impossible and end up with an unwatchable mess like this?

Fair (1 star)
Rated R for violence, profanity and sexuality.
In English and Thai with subtitles.
Running time: 100 minutes
Studio: Lions Gate Home Entertainment

To see a trailer of Bangkok Dangerous, visit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ny5CbT3bAo

So many great people in this--Will Arnett, Zach Galifianakis, Tracy Morgan, Sam Rockwell, Bill Nighy, Steve Buscemi--yet it still comes off as a poor attempt at Alvin and the Chipmunks-izing Disney's Rescue Rangers. Every day for like two years, some guy went home to his wife every night and gave her news like, "I got the Nicolas Cage mole's mouth to move more in sync today," and, "I've almost tweaked the Penelope Cruz guinea pig to look oddly sexual when she sashays, even though she still has the body of a guinea pig," just so we could have this:

Disney, haven't you reached your mediocrity emissions limit for the year yet?
